Top 18 Natural Home Remedies for Diarrhea (Get Rid of Diarrhea Fast)

It's important to treat diarrhea quickly, whether you are a child or an adult. One concern is that you need to stay hydrated, so many of the following remedies are liquids.

The benefit of using natural remedies is that they have minimal side effects, if any, and they stem from healthy sources. They also tend to treat multiple problems at once by replenishing lost nutrients, fluids and electrolytes. Here are some of my own remedies for diarrhea.

1. White Rice is the Best Solid Food

If you have an appetite while you are suffering from diarrhea, white rice is the best thing you can eat. Its blandness and texture won't aggravate your stomach, and the fiber it contains will help the diarrhea go away more quickly. On top of that, rice is easy to make.

What You Need

- 1 cup white rice

- 2 cups water

- A pot or rice cooker

How to Use It

All you need to do is make the rice and eat it. If you have a rice cooker, just combine all the ingredients, turn on the rice cooker, and cook for the amount of time your rice cooker's manual says to.

If you are cooking the rice in a pot as seen here, bring the water to a boil, add the rice, then reduce the heat to a simmer. In about 10-20 minutes, the rice should be done. The rice is done when it is soft and the pot has no water left.

2. Chicken or Vegetable Broths Provide Water and Electrolytes

Chicken broth or vegetable broth is another beneficial food to have if you are suffering from diarrhea. The broth helps keep you hydrated and, since it's salty, helps replenish any lost electrolytes at the same time. Chicken broth has many health benefits because of the incredible amount of nutrients it contains.

Tip

If you wanted to go for an even stronger diarrhea remedy, you could substitute the water with chicken broth instead. Try to boil a whole chicken to make the broth, rather than bouillon.

3. The BRAT Diet has Everything You Need in One Package

The "BRAT" diet consists of four things: bananas, rice, applesauce and toast. This diet is used as a remedy for a variety of gastrointestinal maladies, including IBS, dyspepsia, diarrhea and much more.

None of the items on the diet are particularly strong in flavor, and two of them contain fiber to help get your diarrhea under control. To maximize your fiber intake, you can substitute white bread for whole wheat bread as well.

4. Ginger Tea is for More Than Your Throat

Fresh ginger tea has a wealth of health benefits, so it comes as little surprise that it's great for diarrhea as well. Ginger is excellent for everything from abdominal pain to digestive disorders, but it's not for everyone.

If you have blood pressure problems, do not use ginger. Ginger lowers your blood pressure and can interact with several kinds of medications, so please take care.

What You Need

- 3 tablespoons grated or chopped ginger

- 3 cups of boiling water-

- honey and lemon to taste

How to Use It

Wash and peel the ginger, then peel it or grate it. In a saucepan, bring water to a boil. Place the ginger into another pot or saucepan and pour the boiling water over the ginger.

Cover the pot and let it steep for about 10-15 minutes. Strain out the tea and add honey and lemon as you prefer.

5. Turmeric is a Simple and Cost-Effective Remedy

Turmeric

Turmeric can be found at most grocery stores and is inexpensive. The spice is prized for its many health benefits. It's also available in capsule form as a nutritional supplement.

Turmeric also makes for an excellent diarrhea remedy due to its antimicrobial and binding properties.

What You Need

- 1 teaspoon turmeric

- honey

How to Use It

All you need to do is mix the turmeric with some honey or yogurt, then eat. I personally feel that honey is gentler on your stomach. This little concoction is great for kids, as well.

Try using half a teaspoon of turmeric for kids so that they don't taste it when you give it to them.

6. Avoid Dairy Products to Tame Diarrhea Fast

Dairy Products

If you have diarrhea or have just gotten over it, save yourself some headache and stop eating dairy. Dairy impairs your ability to digest lactose, a type of carbohydrate found in milk products. In fact, you could temporarily become lactose intolerant.

Being unable to digest lactose properly leads to even more diarrhea, bloating, gas and other gastrointestinal problems. There is one exception, however: yogurt. I'll go into more detail in a moment. Try to avoid dairy as much as possible to avoid any unnecessary suffering on your part.

7. Yogurt with Probiotics Will Bring Back the Good Bacteria

While I don't recommend dairy products for diarrhea in general, I will make an exception for yogurt with probiotics. This is the only sort of dairy product proven to benefit diarrhea sufferers.

Yogurt

The secret to its success is the probiotics, which help bring your stomach into balance chemically.

The probiotics contain beneficial bacteria that can keep all manner of microbes at bay. You need this bacteria to fight off harmful bacteria that can make you sick.

Even if you are not suffering from diarrhea, probiotics have many health benefits. If you can, keep eating after you recover from the diarrhea to keep your gut healthy and happy.

8. Stay Away from the Natural Laxatives: Apple Juice and Prune Juice

While apple juice has many health benefits, a diarrhea remedy is not one of them. The same is true of prune juice.

As natural laxatives, these two juices can actually make your diarrhea much worse, leading to potential dehydration.

While most people are aware that prune juice acts as a laxative, not everyone knows that apple juice does as well. I'm bringing this up because the last thing you want to do is turn to apple juice for hydration just to have it dehydrate you instead. Apple juice is popular with children as well, which just magnifies the risk factor.

9. Psyllium Husks Provide an Easy Source of Fiber

Psyllium husks are the main ingredient in Metamucil, and has been for many years. The psyllium works by soaking up excess fluid as it travels through the intestine, which reduces the severity of the diarrhea.

Psyllium-Husks

What You Need

- 1 teaspoon psyllium husk/Metamucil

- 1 yogurt cup

How to Use It

All you need to do is mix the psyllium husk with the yogurt and eat. You can use flavored yogurt or plain yogurt with a little honey to improve the flavor. Just make sure you don't flavor it too strongly; blander food is still best.

10. Apple Cider Vinegar Kills Off Harmful Bacteria

Vinegar may not sound like much of a remedy for anything, but apple cider vinegar has a plethora of medicinal uses.

Apple Cider Vinegar

Unlike apple juice, apple cider vinegar won't irritate your digestive system. Apple cider vinegar acts as a natural antibiotic and a probiotic combined, making it fantastic for diarrhea sufferers.

What You Need

- 1 or 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar

- 8 oz. fresh water

- honey to taste (optional)

How to Use It

Mix the apple cider vinegar and water together and drink on an empty stomach every 3 hours.

You only need to do this for the first day you have diarrhea. If the taste of the vinegar is too off-putting, add some honey to taste.

11. Black Cumin/Black Seed Oil Cures Many Diseases

Black Cumin

Black seed oil is one of the healthiest substances on the planet, recognized in many countries for its fantastic healing properties.

Black cumin has been cited in research studies as a treatment for everything from migraines to cancer, so of course it would be fantastic for diarrhea. Black seed oil is available in raw oil form and capsule form, making it easily accessible.

What You Need

- 1 teaspoon black seed oil

- 1 cup of yogurt OR 1 teaspoon of honey and a slice of toast

How to Use It

There are two ways you can use black seed oil to help with diarrhea. The first is to just mix some of the black seed oil in with yogurt and eat. It doesn't matter if the yogurt is flavored or not.

The second method is to mix the oil with honey and spread it over toast. Either way is perfectly fine; in fact, the second method is given in case you prefer to avoid yogurt completely.

I highly recommend you keep taking black seed as a daily nutritional supplement if you can. It's just that beneficial to your health.

12. Carrots Aren't Just for Rabbits

carrot

Some surprising remedies for diarrhea revolve around carrots, specifically carrot soup and carrot juice. This is because carrots are high in pectin, which lessens diarrhea symptoms tremendously.

Carrots are also high in several important nutrients that we lose when we're afflicted with severe diarrhea. Fortunately, both carrot juice and carrot soup are easy to make.

What You Need

- 4-5 carrots- salt and pepper to taste

- a juicer (for juice)

- a pot of boiling water (for soup)

- a blender or food processor (for soup)

How to Use It

For carrot soup, you can follow the recipe in the video if you feel like having something a little more gourmet; just omit the sour cream.

For something simpler, just boil the carrots, place the carrots and water into your blender, blend it up and add salt and pepper to taste.

For carrot juice, all you need to do is put the carrots into a juicer and add salt and pepper to taste. Drink the juice 2-3 times a day until you feel better.

Tip

Carrot soup is very flexible. To make it even healthier, you can add some garlic or ginger to the recipe.

13. Clear Liquids Are Essential to Prevent Dehydration

One of the biggest concerns there is as far as diarrhea is dehydration, so keeping your fluids up will minimize further complications.

black tea

Dehydration is unpleasant at best, with symptoms including dizziness, weakness, cramping and dry skin. It is vitally important that you drink clear liquids while you have the diarrhea, especially water.

This will ensure your recovery goes more smoothly. If you dislike water, you can manipulate it by making it into tea.

Several kinds of tea are also quite beneficial, so long as you avoid too much sugar. Some beneficial teas to make include black tea, peppermint tea and orange peel tea, which is described below.

14. Orange Peel Tea is Sweet and Soothing

orange peel

Delicious and soothing whether you are ill or not, orange peel tea is vibrant and fresh-tasting. It's also very simple and inexpensive to make.

Orange peel tea dates back to ancient China, where it has been used as both drink and medicine. This tea is great for digestion, particularly a queasy stomach; since the tea's flavor isn't very strong, it's also great for diarrhea.

What You Need

- Oranges- Boiling water

- Honey to taste (optional)

How to Use It

All you do is make the tea and drink it up to twice a day. Peel an orange and chop up the orange peels. Place the orange peels into a pot of boiling water and let it steep for a few minutes.

When finished, pour into a cup and add honey if desired.

15. Potatoes Are a Surprising Remedy for Diarrhea

Another surprising remedy for diarrhea is potato. Just be sure to avoid fried or spicy potato dishes; remember, you need to keep it bland. You can safely eat baked or plain boiled potatoes, or even drink potato juice.

Because of their starch, potatoes are adept at absorbing excess liquid, which lessens diarrhea symptoms.

potatoes

What You Need

- Potatoes

- Water

- Salt and pepper to taste

- Juicer (optional)

How to Use It

For potato juice, you can either place a potato in your juicer and obtain it that way, or you can boil a potato and drink the water that is produced.

Because of how bland potato juice is, you can also experiment with other fruits and vegetables. For baked potatoes, you can just wrap a potato in aluminum foil and bake it in the oven or put it in the microwave for about 5 minutes.

16. Raspberry Leaf and Blackberry Leaf Provide Beneficial Tannins

All plants produce tannins to some degree, but raspberry leaf and blackberry leaf can be used to create a non-alcoholic source of tannin to help reduce diarrhea symptoms.

Avoid drinking wine while you have diarrhea, since the alcohol will irritate your stomach in a heartbeat.

What You Need

- Dried raspberry leaves or blackberry leaves

- Boiling water

- Honey to taste (optional)

How to Use It

Place the leaves into a cup and pour the boiling water over the leaves. Let this steep for at least 10 minutes; add honey if you want a little sweetness. Otherwise, just go ahead and drink.

17. Garlic Acts as a Natural Antibiotic to Eliminate Diarrhea

Raw garlic may not be pleasant to eat, but it is highly beneficial. It acts as a natural antibiotic and anti-inflammatory, cleansing your digestive system as it passes through it.

garlic

Fresh garlic also has lots of potassium, so if you're having any abdominal cramps, this will do the trick. You don't have to eat a whole clove of garlic, though; just use some minced garlic on your lunch or dinner and you're set. Have some garlic about 3-5 times daily, depending on how bad your symptoms are.

Tip

Don't cook your garlic. The reason for this is that its nutrients can be destroyed during cooking, nullifying the effect.

18. Fenugreek Seeds Help Keep You Regular and Lessen Diarrhea

Fenugreek Seeds

One of the single most effective methods of treating diarrhea is fenugreek, because of its high concentrations of something called "mucilage." Mucilage is a glue-like substance that fenugreek produces to retain water.

Mucilage also contains soluble fiber, which helps to reduce diarrhea symptoms. However, you should also be very careful with fenugreek for the same reason.

If you have too much of it, the mucilage can actually worsen your symptoms, so please take care.

What You Need

- ½ to 1 teaspoon of fenugreek

- yogurt with probiotics

How to Use It

All you need to do is mix the fenugreek with your yogurt and eat. Only do this once a day to avoid having too much fenugreek.

Conclusion

I hope these natural remedies will help you and your family with this troublesome disease they have helped me and my daughter. Diarrhea can be dangerous if it isn't treated correctly, especially in the case of children. Also keep in mind that diarrhea can be a sign of another, more serious illness.
